Living in the Dark!!

Hurricane Ike hit Louisville.... or at least it's winds did. On Sunday afternoon (Sept. 14th) we had a huge wind storm. We were driving to church and Jon was dodging leaves, branches and debris. During church the lights were flickering and finally church was dismissed early. Being in church for 1 and 1/2 hours our drive home showed us how much this wind storm had destroyed. In that short time Trees were split in half and fully uprooted, signs were down and power lines were hanging putting over 250,000 people in Louisville out of power. We happened to be one those. We were very lucky to come home and not have any tree damage... our street looked like a war zone! Branches, trees, and power lines down everywhere. A house 2 blocks a way had a huge tree fall on the roof and a house on the next street had a huge tree fully uprooted! It is crazy and amazing what hurricane like winds can do! They said on the news that a tornado makes a somewhat straight path but with this storm it was very widely spread! It has been interesting living in the dark. Our power went out Sunday early afternoon and just barely turned on Thursday afternoon. We were very lucky to have a neighbor share his generator with us so we didn't loose anything in our fridge or deep freeze. We have been eating better meals on our little stove then when we have power. We also had the luxury of hot water... having many friends that did not! The cool nights (low 60's) and cooler days (high 70's low 80's) and a full moon at night have been nice and a lifesaver with out fans or airconditing. It is amazing what we take forgranted when you don't have it anymore (Internet, microwave, stove, most of all laundry machine!) We are safe and sound and very blessed that our house is unharmed!

This was a house one street over from us. The owner was in the garage when the tree up rooted and came out with only some glass in his leg...
They had to use a crane to lift the huge branches up and over the house...

This split tree was at Seneca park. It was amazing to see the results of the hurricane Ike's winds!(I'm glad we didn't have water with them!)

This House is 2 blocks away from us. A tree fell on the roof and 1/2 of the roof is gone!

Amber! How fun to find your blog! Your family is darling and it looks like you are all doing well! Glad to hear you survived without power for four days! How crazy is that? I can't believe all the damage! And your race looked like so much fun! If we were going to be in Louisville next year, I'd say count me in for sure! (sigh) All those Louisville pics sure make me miss it! Take care!

It's nice to finally feel like life is getting back to normal. I'm amazed at how much loosing power (9 days for us) interupted our lives!
